Explain why both the art and therapy part are equally important in the art therapy process.
In this lesson, we'll explore the art part and the therapy part of the term “art therapy”. We will take a look at how the basics of art therapy interact with both parts.
Please watch this video about a client's perspectives on art therapy.
Please read the following (found in Library Resources tab on Canvas) by Thursday:
Chapter 4, p. 69-80 in Rubin, J. A. (2010). Introduction to art therapy: Sources & resources. New York: Routledge.
Why is it important for art therapists to know about art, about therapy, and about the interaction between the two?
Please post your original response to the discussions by the end of Thursday.
Each original response to the discussion for the lesson must be at least 150 words long and specifically reference some concept or content reference in the coursework for the week. Read peer responses and reply to at least ONE individual.
Your responses should reflect one or more of these types:
This paper is to be written in APA format. You will select a specific setting and population who is served by an expressive therapy to study independently and present your findings in a written format based on several prompts. The chosen topic should be one that you can use for your course project. Your thesis will include which setting and population in your community can benefit from art you make and why you think these benefits will occur. After submitting this work, you will select another student’s work from your small discussion group and review it (the critique is a separate assignment under the assignment tab).
If you have any questions about this assignment, please read the Course Paper Details found on Canvas in the first week of content before emailing the instructor with questions. Also, please review the rubric below.
This paper is to be written in APA format. You will select a specific setting and/or population that could be served by art therapy to study independently and present your findings in a written format based on several prompts. Remember the difference between art therapy and art as therapy - see discussion 2! Anyone can be served by art therapy and you will narrow down your research to one setting or population. Your thesis will include which setting and population in your community can benefit from art (not necessarily art therapy but art in general) and why you think these benefits will occur. After submitting this work, you will select another student’s work from your small discussion group and review it (the critique is a separate assignment under the assignment tab).
The paper is designed to help you research your local area and the impacts of art on a community.
This means you will do RESEARCH - with at least 5 references - to show the professor you understand why or how art will impact the population you are learning about.
Please use the following as prompts and guidelines (just suggestions but follow according to how much you have narrowed down as noted above) for your paper:
Each research paper must be at least 800 words long and no more than 1500 words.
Students will maintain a weekly journal throughout the semester. The journal will incorporate quick visual responses (some written material may be included) at least one day a week. Two- or three-dimensional images are appropriate.
Visual responses will be about student’s daily life, course content and student’s feelings related to course content. Submit a .pdf file each week to show instructor visual progress (this file will include at least one or more entries in the journal). Rather than the psychological content, grades will be assigned based upon demonstration of thorough effort, completion and introspection.
Please upload your file by the end of Sunday.
Visual Journals will be graded as follows:
The knowledge check quizzes are optional but completing them will help you become aware of how well you comprehend the content each lesson and prepare you for the assessments later in the course.
